The book looks at issues on a macro level by evaluating their global impact and systemic roots, and also on the micro level by tracking a number of men and women directly involved in both the problems and solutions facing the United States and the broader world.
The darker side of philanthropy is explored and evaluated. People with power are not likely to change the world to a significant degree, because it would threaten their own power. The people who have the power to cause positive change in the world, stand to gain the least from genuine positive change and have the most to lose as a result.
