To many the recipes on the following pages will prove a welcome variation to routine menus, but to those who lay claim to Slovak parentage, this part of the book should prove a precious heritage. Here they will find preserved in writing some of the treasured customs and traditional recipes that heretofore have been committed by word of mouth from Mother to Daughter. In this manner we hope to insure the permanence of that heritage which has so enriched the lives of the Slovak people in this country. Something of the cultural history of the Slovak people lies before the reader. From the region of the Danube, from Nitra, from Saris, from Orava, they cameā€”our parents and grandparents, to the New World and brought with them the customs of their own little village or hamlet. And as strangers in a strange land they sought to forestall the nostalgia for their old homeland by interweaving the new with the old, the customs of America with those of the land from which they came.

The traditional menus for Christmas and Easter are probably the most significant and interesting. These we have sought to present, together with some explanation of the symbolic meaning of the customs. Though there is a variation, according to local origin, of the menus, we have tried to incorporate them in one.
